Changing an adult disposable diaper for a wheelchair user requires preparation, gentle handling and attention to hygiene.
Prepare supplies
Have a fresh diaper, disposable gloves, wipes and a disposal bag within reach before starting. Ensure privacy and lock the wheelchair brakes.
Step by step
Help the user lean to one side, unfasten the tabs and roll the soiled diaper away. Clean the skin from front to back, let it dry, then slide the new diaper into position and fasten the tabs symmetrically.
After the change
Check that leg cuffs are pulled out to prevent leaks, dispose of the used diaper hygienically, and wash hands thoroughly.
